Second Life Primer
Tonight the show is about one thing. Second Life.
I’ve been in too many meetings and conversations where it quickly becomes apparent that people either don’t know enough or they think the wrong things about Second Life and I wanted to clear it all up with what I hope is a good overview of what Second Life is and isn’t.
Virtual worlds and new media go together like the infamous chocolate and peanut butter. Sure, right now everyone might not see the connection, but we will all look back someday and shake our heads at the doubters.
This picture is one of the meetings that I mention on the show where like minded individuals gathered at my house to discuss marketing. Doesn’t it look more fun then the same old boring chat room?
One thing that I completely forgot to mention on the show is to thank Eric Rice for introducing me to this and for being completely forward thinking. That guy continues to tap new corners of this world and pushing forward to help out everyone. Not only is he a great guy, but damn is he fun to watch. And I mean that in a completely business manner.
If this introduction to Second Life isn’t enough and you want to discuss further I’m only an e-mail away.

Very good intro.
One thing I want to mention is in addition to it taking a lot of time, it also takes a lot of bandwidth. When I first signed up and wandered around for about 4 hours, it chewed up 1Gb of bandwidth! I was amazed. I haven’t spent a lot of time in SL since due to this factor. However, if you don’t move around much, your computer doesn’t have to constantly download data to render the environment, so it wouldn’t cost as much bandwidth.
I never thought about that. It’s been a long time since I had to pay for bandwidth like that so I never even stopped to think about that. I’m sure it does push down a ton of data.
And yes, it needs an up to date computer for sure just to handle the imagery.
[…] If you've heard the buzz about SL but still don't have any idea what it's all about, check out this podcast. When people ask me about SL, I'm sending them a link to this podcast. […]
Tweaking your settings can help dramatically, specifically lower your “draw distance” (under Graphics in Preferences) this will make distant objects disappear (until you fly over to them) however the amount of data you will need to download will go way down.

Hey, who is that good looking guy in the lower right of the picture?

CC, a nice (and enthusiastic) intro! I can’t believe Babson bought an island! Very cool!
To your listeners - no one really gets it ’til they go. Try it! And visit the Second Life Library - just type Info Island in the region.
There are lots of helpful people there ready to welcome newbies
