CC, a nice (and enthusiastic) intro! I can't believe Babson bought an island! Very cool!

To your listeners - no one really gets it 'til they go. Try it! And visit the Second Life Library - just type Info Island in the region. :) There are lots of helpful people there ready to welcome newbies :)

Tweaking your settings can help dramatically, specifically lower your "draw distance" (under Graphics in Preferences) this will make distant objects disappear (until you fly over to them) however the amount of data you will need to download will go way down.

I never thought about that. It's been a long time since I had to pay for bandwidth like that so I never even stopped to think about that. I'm sure it does push down a ton of data.

And yes, it needs an up to date computer for sure just to handle the imagery.

Very good intro.

One thing I want to mention is in addition to it taking a lot of time, it also takes a lot of bandwidth. When I first signed up and wandered around for about 4 hours, it chewed up 1Gb of bandwidth! I was amazed. I haven't spent a lot of time in SL since due to this factor. However, if you don't move around much, your computer doesn't have to constantly download data to render the environment, so it wouldn't cost as much bandwidth.
