PodShow & AOL Announce PodShowPRO

Today AOL and PodShow are announcing a new service called PodShowPRO. (Press release)

I got a sneak peek at it and I think it’s a big step in the right direction. The fact that this will allow business users, academics and other organizations create, share and discover podcasts is a great step forward.

I’m not sure if this is the end all solution (only time will tell on that one), but any tool that lowers the boundaries to get into, create and listen to podcasting is good in my book.

My understanding is that this is going to be directly integrated into the newly announced AIM Pro, so not only will it give people the ability to create and publish podcasts, but based on what I’ve seen it appears that content from appropriate independent producers will also be suggested to users if they desire this feature. This is what has me most excited because it enhances the discovery of appropriate podcasts that business professionals might never discover, but they now will.

Just thinking about this from an employment standpoint has me jazzed as well. A business could create a private channel for their company or even a section of that company that employees would subscribe to. Communication could flow on this channel from the most minor of conversations to major announcements from the CEO or President.

I haven’t had a chance to play with it yet and the proof is always in the pudding, but i’m excited about the possibilities and I look forward to trying it out.

Another service I can’t use, sadly. AIMPro has absolutely no Mac support – which is a shame, since recent survey statistics indicate that Mac users are more likely to listen to podcasts than Windows users. The PodshowPro module in AIMPro is interesting, especially the content creation part, but we’ll see how it turns out in practice.

You know what would be really cool, that I could totally see being VERY useful in an AIM environment? AIMBot podcast reception. Let’s say that I have a friend who is job hunting but they, frankly, just don’t get it when it comes to personal branding. Let’s say I want to refer them to MTG #2 on your personal brand. We know AIM and AIMPro have audio capabilities. What would be cool is if I could tell them to IM PodshowPro (a bot) with the message MTG2 (or something like that) and they’d start to hear MTG #2 right then and there. Truly on demand podcasting. The bot could also respond with the iTunes itpc link so that if they loved it, they could subscribe right then and there as well.

    Wouldn’t that be cool?

Excuse me, I have to go copyright this idea. On Demand IM Podcast Reception. :)

I downloaded it today so that I could play with it and I have to say that I’m impressed. The icon they use is horrible though for podcasts because I couldn’t find it. I’m still not sure what it is. A radio perhaps? *laugh*
