The Goodness of Kevin Smith
Today Clerks 2 opens to the masses. As a Kevin Smith fan, I’ve been psyched about this for a while and will be going to the movie before the day is done.
But, the reason I wanted to talk about this movie on Managing the Gray is the fact that they tried a whole bunch of new things for this campaign including You Tube and MySpace. It’s the first movie I’ve seen do this for real. Sure, others have posed as doing it, but Kevin Smith and team really did. Heck, they were the first movie I’ve seen do a video diary of the making of the movie and have an RSS feed for it!!!
I thought listeners of this podcast would enjoy hearing some of the unique things they tried and I offered some suggestions on other things they could add next time around to take it even futher.
As always you can call in comments to 206-309-4729 or drop me an e-mail.
See ya at the movies! *grin*

[...] If you are not aware, I’m a HUGE Kevin Smith fan. Hell, I even did a whole episode of Managing the Gray about him today because he was on my mind. [...]
Hey CC, Kevin Smith was interviewed on a video podcast back in February. It’s a couple of hours long; they talked about his whole career and had to split it into two shows. Oh and they had to shoot it from Kevin’s office. Sucks to be a podcaster, don’t it

I too am amazed how much non-traditional advertising the flick did. In addition to the MySpace and YouTube advertising you mentioned, they also promoted the flick heavily on iTunes and on Apple.com – where a special Clerks 2 featurette was posted for quite some time. Have you seen the movie yet? I went and saw it last night and loved it. This is how sequels should be.
Hey CC,
I just listened to this episode of MTG. It got me thinking about the music industry. Imagine if they had embraced this stuff back in the day? Imagine if Metallica figured out a way to make Napster cool? Smith gets it mostly because he has to – he’s just that smart. I see tons of musicians using social media now… and now, they don’t need major labels.
Great episode – it got me thinking… that’s what counts.
Ok CC
I went and got the podcast and watched one vid kevin smith did- It was called my marbles.
Is this cutting edge?
Keep up the good work.
