Zoho

I’ve got a new laptop. It’s all shiny and new and thus has no software on it. I realized this last night as I needed to take an idea out of my head and type it up. What to do?

I instantly thought of Writely as the perfect solution, but it’s not an open BETA yet so I had to find an alternative. Google pointed me towards Zoho Writer so I gave it a try.

It boils down to an online word processor which is exactly what I needed. Nothing to install. No footprint. Just fire up a web browser from anywhere in the world and I can write. It was exactly what I needed at that moment in time.

I love that in todays world I can realize I need a piece of software and discover that someone has created it. That makes me happy. VERY happy.

Oh, so what was it that I had to write down? That you’ll have to wait and hear about later.

I did exactly the same thing last week when I was looking for a web based wordy. I’ve gotten fed up of waiting for Google to invite me into the beta programme, even though I was using writely before they grabbed hold of it! So when I found Zopa I thought it was great. I’ve also been messing about with Think Free, which is (for the moment anyway) free as well, and that seems pretty good, if a little too much like an offline app reworked for the online world (in a similar way to gmail vs. Windows Live Mail).

If I remember doesn’t Zopa allow you to upload to different blogs as well? Which is a nice touch. I was meaning to write a test blog post about Zopa USING Zopa on adventures – maybe I will now.

Hey, so far I never knew that other alternatives exists for writely. Thanks for pointing me about ThinkFree/ZohoWriter.
I like Zoho Writer very much because of the feature >> posting to blog without logging in. I cannot believe that these services are totally free.

I guess “totally free” depends on the definition :) Wait and see I suspect, people want to make money out of these things is my suspicioon – they aren’t doing it for the love of it, are they?

Hi Everyone, Thanks for taking note of Zoho Writer.

Howard : Indeed you can post to blogs. We support posting to WordPress, Blogger, LiveJournal & TypePad. (any blog platform that supports metaWeblog API should work too, though officially the above is the list)

Zoho Writer will continue to have a Personal Free Edition.

And what’s more, Zoho Writer is part of a larger suite of web applications from Zoho. Check out http://www.zoho.com for more (we have an online spreadsheet & presentation tool as well)

Zoho is ok, but I do like Writely better. I was lucky enough to get in the beta. Google should stop screwing around and release the thing, it’s rock solid. Another good alternative is WetPaint at http://www.wetpaint.com. It’s a free wiki and is very usable. wysiwyg editing and no limits on pages. Very cool.

I actually have since gotten into Writely, but I think I like Zoho better. Not sure. Need to play some more.

One thing I should never fail to point out is how Arvind from AdventNet is sooo nice and personal to post on people’s blogs when they write about Zoho Writer. He did it to me too! Super-nice personal. :o )

    Writely’s now in Open Beta.

I’d like to use Zoho more but there’s one bug that particularly affects me on there–I’ll touch base on the Zoho Writer forums again about it.

    @ C.C. : Thanks!!

@ Torley: Thanks :-) Hope you’d seen my reply to your query in our forums by now.
