Music, Brands & Getting a Job in New Media
Managing the Gray #29 is different then most of my shows because it’s 100% driven by user call ins.
The variety of topics covered everything from self brands to music in advertising and ended with a good discussion about how to get a job in the new media space. I hope the last part generates some feedback.

A cousin has MS, the singer from my brother’s old band (now with a group called the Shods) and a friend’s father (also a French teacher at my high school) do as well. I know what MS can do, so I put a small drop in the bucket for your walk.

Thanks for a great show!
In episode #29, you talked about what young PRs/Marketers can do to break into the new media business. I’m a final year PR student living in Norway. After graduation I am looking into relocating to the US (or the UK).
Looking at the requirements on job ads on different sites I can’t help being left with the feeling that being a non-US graduate will always be a disadvantage for me. To do something about this problem, I’ve decided that I have to do something to ’sell’ myself to possible future employers, work more on ‘branding’ myself
My question is, I have already started getting more involved with different social media and networking sites (Second Life, LinkedIn, Twitter etc) and have decided to start blogging, what else can I do?
Hi CC. Great episode as always. I’m really pumped after listening to Managing the Gray again – happens every time. I have a couple of notes for the episode:
1) New Media is likely not taught in most institutions because most profs (at least the ones I’ve had) tend to stick to the curriculum they’ve always used, and the text book that goes along.
I took an Internet Marketing course in University a few years ago and the prof was using a text book from 1996. He clearly wasn’t up to speed on “new” developments, like say email.
2) In response to your caller about looking for work. I suggest he do what I did. Research the companies he’d be interested in working for, then cold call the CEO or VP of Marketing and ask for a candid 15 minute chat “about the industry”. Be sure you tell them you’re a student.
Most people will be more than happy to spend a few minutes, which always become much more because people love to talk about themselves.
DON’T ASK FOR A JOB. You’re there simply to network. Ask them questions about the industry specifically. If they like you (do your homework before you go!) they’ll be more than happy to put you in touch or suggest some people for you to contact in similar companies.
ALWAYS ask the person if you can use them as a contact when you contact the person they suggest you touch base with.
Good luck,
Dave Delaney
