Facebook and the Passion of Listeners
The last show sure did get your attention! Lots of voices on today’s show as the comment line lit up with people sharing their thoughts on stats and my reaction to them. As always you can call into 206-309-4729 at any time to share your thoughts.
This show focuses in on your passion but also talks about Facebook and the recent stuff that happened with Beacon. I give a brief overview so that you can be aware of what happened. For a much more detailed overview I highly suggest checking out Matt Dickman’s amazingly detailed post.
Some links to items talked about on the show:
- My Facebook Group
- Now is Now Facebook Page
- NewMediaProfessional.com
- Dave Winer’s Podcasting Post
- Seesmic
I hope that you get out of this what you need today. If not, we’ll catch ya on the next show! If you get a second and want to leave a review on iTunes, I sure wouldn’t complain. *grin*
Update - I realized after I posted this that podcasting should never be about “first” in any sort so I’m changing my own rules on the Seesmic invites and am going to pick 5 people at random to give them to. Not fair that people on the East Coast and Europe get them and by the time the West Coast wakes up they are gone.

Be aware also of regulatory issues with Beacon as well!

Hey C.C. - this is my first time listening to “Managing The Grey” . I am a newbie to all of this “social media” stuff so I need all the help I can get
I am sure I will listen again and maybe I will see you at Podcamp NY.
So go ahead… invite me… I double dare ya.

Last night on Twitter you guys were doing the seesmic beer club thing. At that time I really wanted an invite. Still do. Topic in your show that sparked some interest was the fact that one of your blogs you leave to do your own thing. Family can read it, etc. etc.
I have been podcasting a long time like yourself and my site has been strictly GBS business for 3 years. I used to have a personal blog years ago and I need one again. It was fun times.
Great voice, by the way, brings back the old bitchslap days. At that time you could subscribe to all the podcasts and I did on a 3G ipod.

I think with facebook ads (and indeed any ads on a lot of social network sites) where the users have a real passionate relationship with the site, you’re always going to get a whole load of negative feedback when you introduce ads. YouTube are having the same thing right now with ads, but more so with old-media content (Oprah for example) going onto YouTube. You can please some of the people some of the time, but you’ll never get it 100% right as long as you try to advertise, and therefore sell, something to someone. Howard.
One thing I was curious about with the call-in messages… those people that are obsessed with stats - what’s their reason? Is it for advertisers, or to feel popular, or keeping tabs on their bandwidth? I’ve got podcaster friends that for years now check their stats 3-4 times a day, every day, on Feedburner and iTunes. Their mood swings with lost subscribers and soars when they gain a dozen.
Great that MTG has swung to keeping us updated in the world of new media tools like Facebook, Seesmic and Twitter for sure. Maybe someday MTG can touch upon what to do with all these networks of people - besides growing your friends list. I see the same people across different networks, patting each other on the back for ‘getting in’ (so many are in beta) but there has got to be a USE for these networks? Is it just being ’seen’ and staying important? How have you for example used these networks for TRUE networking?
I really think that we all need to remember that all of the tracking is opt in. We need to register with facebook and all of the other services. We make the decision to turn the channels. It is not mandatory to have accounts on any of these services and if you don’t like what happens there, cancel the accounts. I really hate the idea that we all adopt a service and yet we don’t like what the service does to make money to stay in business.
Just started listening to your show, a few twitters recommended it. I have it added to iTunes. Always great to listening to someone who is so into it
Really curious about Seesmic, I own a winery and think adding Seesmic to my blog on our site would be awesome. I get so many questions regarding winemaking and if I had a camera on during our last bottling a few weeks ago it would have been Hilarious. Lets just say that we had a problem with plumbing and everyone was wearing our 2005 Cabernet! *LOL*
Would love an invite to Seesmic if there are any left, have a great day!
You got the comments flowing. It’s regrettable that it took the seesmic invites to get me to update my subscription, but I still find it hard to listen to all the Podcasts that interest me. I’m going to have to check out the Facebook Pages — good stuff. Hope I have a shot at the seesmic invite. Thanks in advance.
CC — Thanks for the shout out. Great show as always!
Hey C.C.,
Enjoyed the show as always.
I’ve been thinking about trying out Facebook pages for my podcast. In fact, I’ve already created the page, but just haven’t taken the plunge of promoting it yet. It seems like an interesting ad implementation, but we’ll see.
Thanks for all you do,
Will
Hey C.C, I had some thoughts to share on the stats subject.
You know stats are about more then just how many people are listening to your show. You can use them for things like working out you’re user experience, or thinking about any number of things that are totally different from content.. which are things that I think most people in this space would want to be looking at, even just for there personal stuff.
The other thing I was thinking about is on the nature of creativity and creative management. Often the success of R&D efforts, or creatives, comes because they decided to ignore management. I mean the kind of management that insures McDonalds Hamburgers taste the same no matter where you go is a very different kind of management then what is needed for innovation or dare we say New Media.. Some of this is that what motivates creative work is different from what motivates manual labor..
So I guess the point I’m trying to come to is that when I hear you talking about ignoring stats.. I feel like that’s what your doing.. your ignoring management, or you’re ignoring external demands.. your putting the focus on something more internal, something deeper.. something perhaps more important.. your passions.. And I think this is probably a not insignificant factor in your success.
So that’s my thoughts, take care.
Hey CC, great show as always. You never fail to reinvigorate my love of New Media every time I listen. I like the idea of using facebook pages for promoting a business. I think that all these companies would avoid the backlash of angry users if they were just more transparent up front about the desire to use the critical mass they achieve to make money through advertising. They should just say up front that they intend to market to you, and that they will do their best to keep all the ads served relevant and give users an option to opt out of future instances of the same ad if they don’t like it.
I would appreciate this as an advertiser knowing that the impressions I’m paying for are only reaching viewers that really will be interested in seeing it. It’s about relevance and relatedness. I will ALWAYS listen to a recommendation from you, because you’re a trusted source. Some inane ad inserted into my facebook feed will just piss me off. Moving forward, it will be about engagement, relatedness, and ROI based on smaller numbers of impressions moreso than CPM.
I can see that I’m WAY late for the seesmic invite. I guess Ill just have to hang out on twitter late at night waiting for Loic to sign on.
G’Day C.C.
I’ve been listening for some time learning as much as I can in this space from others and yourself. I’ve gone from knowing nothing to now having a podcast.
What everyone is saying is be passionate, shout loud, do it and see how it goes, all the rest will work itself out.
Passion, Passion, Passion is the reoccurring theme. Everywhere!!!
I have no idea how to make income or a career out of my podcast, if I can great but that’s not the reason for doing it. I’m doing it to create a space in my life for change and opportunities. Maybe they will come maybe not but it has and will be one hell of a ride either way.
This is the constant theme of what you seem to be saying C.C. and this episode seemed to sum it up with the call ins and your comments.
If we could all live by our passions the world would be a better place.
Ya!
Best of Days
Thanks for keeping us up to date in new media. I have had a Facebook account for a while now, but kinda forgot about it. You have renewed my interest! See you around the new media pool…
