Ten Things in Ten Minutes

listen to managing the gray

I presented at the New Marketing Summit yesterday and was given a ten minute slot to talk just before lunch. I wanted to make it an information filled ten minutes, so I decided to make a list of ten social media tools that everyone should try in order to get a quick introduction to the space.

My goal was to have ten things that anyone could sign up for and try out over the course of a week during their lunch break. I didn’t want anything that cost money or was a complete waste of time.

As soon as I got home I realized that I wanted to record a Managing the Gray going through the ten items because I had to fly through it yesterday. I love Chris Brogan, but only having 10 minutes was hard! *grin*

In case you don’t have time to listen to the show, the 10 things were:

  1. Google yourself, your brand, your competitors. See what is being said and where you rank.
  2. Set up multiple Google Alerts based around anything you want to be automatically notified about when a post appears online.
  3. Begin using Twitter. Even if you use it more to read what others are saying then saying much yourself. Use Twitter Search to see what you might have missed on a topic such as your brand.
  4. Join a social network. The two I recommend getting started with are LinkedIn and Facebook
  5. Sign up for newsletters. The three I showed are MarketingVox, WOMMA and MarketingProfs as great starters to keep you informed.
  6. Get a Flickr account even if you don’t plan on sharing photos. Search for events that you know are going on to start getting to know the people and faces.
  7. Read constantly. Shelfari and Goodreads can both help you see what other people are reading and get your new marketing bookshelf started.
  8. Attend events because nothing beats face-to-face. I love using Upcoming to see what is going on and what my friends are attending.
  9. Evernote is what I use to capture everything that gets my attention. I like to think of it as my virtual Moleskine.
  10. Yelp allows you to review and discover vendors of all sorts anywhere in the world.

You can view the slides that go along with this on SlideShare, where I put all my presentations.

What would you add to this list?

I love it - great list. But I think we need to be a bit more accurate. It’s not ten minutes. The time it took me to read twitter, look at your tweet, read this and give it thought, then comment is ten minutes alone.

You and I know each other, so I know you’ll appreciate my candor here. What makes social media outstanding and different from marketing, is that we can learn so much more about people, companies, and topics.

it is a relationship and those take time. I get the headline, Ten in Ten Minutes, it’s a good one. To appreciate CC Chapman, however, is to spend time with his blog, his podcast Managing the Grey, and meeting him at last year’s SNCR Symposium.

There I found out in conversations that he likes finding great diners to eat at, which is why I’ve on occassion sent a couple his way. Like Mickey’s Diner in St. Paul http://www.mickeysdiningcar.com/

It was so popular during the Republican Convention they had to keep people away http://culld.us/l2492115 - :)

Ok my point is this, CC provides an excellent list that is able to be read in ten minutes. Thanks CC. And to get more out of his work and enjoy his passion is to spend more time with it.

The next step when considering social media is how will you contribute to this relationship. The idea of reading, listening, and posting thoughtfully will need to be factored into your time. I’d suggest your first ten minutes here will lead to a readjustment of your day as you receive and give value from and to others.

You will know this list and all the things it leads to are rewarding when you replace other tasks in your day with people like CC.

All the best, CC hope to see you at SNCR in November.

The title came from the fact that I literally had 10 minutes to present at this conference. It was WAY to fast which is why I recorded this podcast so that I didn’t have to rush through it as much as I did when I originally presented it :)

[…] Pick the things that work for you: My friend C.C. Chapman gave a talk at the New Marketing Summit Wednesday and pointed to the tools and things you should be using to monitor your social media presence.  He makes some great suggestions and hints at a workflow BUT pick the tools that work for YOU.  Not the one that your friend recommended, but the one that you try out that fits into your workflow and makes your day more productive. CC, great podcast. I think a lot of us forget to think about the fundamentals sometimes getting too wrapped up in stats, SEO crap, Tracking etc… that we forget the things that got us where we were in our own networks.

The point that really hit home with me was Flickr! I use flickr quite a bit and to be honest I don’t seem to get a ton of traffic from flickr to my blog. However, Google searches flickr and adds photos to it’s image search. Since I have used flickr I have had huge results in traffic from google image search, and on top of that my Gavel & Stryker that Whitney Hoffman bought from me was featured in three major newspapers online formats!

So those artists out there that don’t want to share….try sharing! Use a creative commons attribution license and see how things go from there. You never know what might get picked up.

This was great, thanks CC. I’d heard of most of them, but not Shelfari. Yelp is not yet in Australia but the concept is great. Can’t wait to use it when it gets here. Thanks for MTG.
