Death to the Term Mommy Blogger

listen to managing the gray

Before someone reads that title and never listens to the episode the point of today’s Managing the Gray is to say that there are a lot of people involved in parenting outside of people who fit into the typical little box of “mommy bloggers.” I think Dads are getting the short stick and I think that there are more women out there who are parents, but they create content in other areas. I don’t see the term going away anytime soon but I wish the singular focus on it would! This might be the closest thing to a rant that you’ll ever here on the show. *grin*

I'm a Happy Digital DadLinks mentioned on today’s show include:

This weekend is Father’s Day and I hope that you take the time to give your Dad, husband or favorite dad an extra hug. Presents are fun, but at least for me, quality time is the best thing.

CC – Agree totally on this. Old media has the same issue. All the parenting magazines are geared purely towards mothers. Not a single one has anything for dads, in spite of their names – Parenting and Parents stand out as obvious examples.

Also – yes yes yes on the dad being portrayed as a bumbling idiot. Where are the smart dads?

I totally agree with everything, it is frustrating that everything is geared towards moms, I fight that perception everyday but it is a constant uphill battle.

    Thanks,

[...] you that have wanted to hear me rant a bit, you’ll be happy to know that on this week’s Managing the Gray I went off on the whole Mommy Blogging focus and why it bugs me so much. With Father’s Day [...]

I was taking a break, while my daughter is taking her afternoon nap, to try to catchup on blogs/podcasts etc. and I had to listen to your rant because it does strike a bit of a nerve with me. I guess that I feel like we’re all trying to define ourselves into silos like we do in our ‘business’ lives. And I totally agree where you went with this because I’m a dad, but also I’m a son, a husband, a shopper an uncle and plenty more. Sure, I suppose you can tag me with any of these, but I certainly feel like I’m a combination of them all and not just one or the other.
Certainly gives me food for thought at work too, as we’re trying to flush out some target personas right now – making sure we’re not to one dimensional with them.
    Thanks for the rant!

Amen brother CC. I’m tired of being left out of the conversation. Down with stereotypical household gender roles!

We at Sony agree. We love Mom bloggers but we think Dads have a lot to say about parenting too. More to come…
